If you are a person who did not know how it was that you were able to live without the assistance of a cellular phone, you’re probably aware of the wonders and defects that modern day cellular phones have. Along with the appearance, the versatility that a cellular phone has or lacks is generally the difference between being successful and a complete dud in terms of popularity, even though the less versatile and attractive can be a better seller than the other one.

Why is this? Because of the price; if the cellular phone is incredibly attractive and completely versatile, it usually is too pricey for comfort, and cellular users who have the financial power to buy it, will pass on it because of the price or the difficulty learning all the functions available on the phone.

G Phone has promised to turn the page on that matter, by creating a virtually free cellular phone with all the necessities a busy business person or even a college or university student require to be in touch all the time, everywhere and anywhere. This suspense has begun to take it’s toll and many wonder if it all was a midnight’s summer dream.

Let me set the scenario for you. You are at your office downtown working away on that new major contract when your assistant runs in to tell you that the client on this new major contract is calling to say that they are no longer going to be able to go through with the deal.

You take the call in your conference room so your secretary can take notes while you are on the phone with the client. You also call in your manager who is responsible for working on the new major contract. The client tells you that their loan fell through and they are not going to move forward with the contract.

You call your accountant on his cell phone at the golf coarse to cover finance and your lawyer at his office for legal advice. The accountant suggests calling the banker in charge of the loan department at the local bank; he is added to the conference call as well.

To make a long story short, the new major contract is saved by the power of phone conferencing call. Phone conference service is a wonderful thing. A conference call can be a very important business tool.

One of the things that I found really intriguing about the Android operating system is that unlike a lot of companies out there it is completely open sourced and the fact that Google is giving away over 10 million dollars to independent developers who can come up with the best apps using the Android platform is pretty cool. I am anxious to see what type of user created applications come out of the challenge and I wonder if it will give other companies any ideas about how they will handle future releases of their software. It seems that creativity in the mobile industry as well as tech in general is not nearly as encouraged as it once was, so maybe this initiative by Google will help revive some of that long gone muse of the tech world. I can not help but wonder where the software industry would have been today if more developers were encouraged to pursue open source platforms and create useful applications for companies that had the backing to support it, not only for mobile technology but for software applications in general. I guess only time well tell how well the future gPhone generation will go.

As noted in a previous post, the gPhone, if it is developed, will incorporate the Android platform. The open source platform, developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance is along the same concept as Linux—a free source whose code can be modified and freely distributed by anyone who knows how to do that sort of thing.

In watching a demonstration video of phones using the Android platform, the different applications are very exciting. The aim, according to the video, is to use this platform to develop limitless numbers of “uPhones”—phones that will be completely customizable by the users in terms of what you need and want it to do.

The platform is planned to be run on a 3G wireless network, the same as the 3G iPhone that’s expected to debut sometime this summer. No single phone is expected to have the Android platform, which is perhaps why talk of an actual gPhone has died down.

Another fun feature is a virtual web browser history, akin to what we saw last year in all those promising MS Vista ads of the cascading windows. This is another feature that is a variation on the iPod and iTunes software that lets you do a visual scroll through album covers and the like.

The Android platform will also be able to mix 3D and 2D graphics, so you can play first-person shooter games on your phone! If that isn’t good living, I don’t know what is!

The all important question. Partly the reason the whole gPhone rumours began flying was because the iPhone was being praised and people wondered if Google wished to deal yet another devastating blow to their competitors, in this case, Apple.

But can they do it?

In our opinion, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the gPhone will completely pwn the iPhone.

Google is the biggest website in the world, surely a simple ad on the homepage would yield huge sales? We use google so much, so we know and trust it. Why not use their brand of phone too?

You’ve seen Google earth, so if they can manage to get satellite images of almost everywhere on the planet, so it’s no surprise they’re purchasing their own frequency for the phone.

Plans also show that the gPhone will be using open source Android platform, which will allow a helluva lot of applications to be written specifically for the product.

Google have seen their competition, and now aim to top it comfortably. They have the money and the power, so what’s stopping them?

Original details of the gPhone prototype have been as follows :

  • Five inches long
  • Three inches wide
  • Touch-sensitive (I dare you not to ‘lol’ at that combination of those first three)
  • A full sized QWERTY keyboard

In terms of software, you’ll be able check emails, edit text, and watch YouTube videos (surprise surprise!)

This information is for an internal design, code-named “Dream”.
Google have so far failed to deny rumour of them developing a phone, so this could well be it folks.
